Iowa Braille Challenge | Events
The Annual Iowa Braille Challenge will take place on Saturday February 25 from 10 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. at the Iowa Department for the Blind.
Blind and visually impaired youth from across Iowa will be participating in this event that will test students’ Braille reading, comprehension and writing skills.
Those who score the highest in their age division will go on to compete in the national competition this summer in Los Angeles.
The competition hopes to promote the bettering and knowledge of Braille skills and literacy to not only the visually impaired, but to the general public.
“Those who compete in the Braille Challenge are demonstrating their competency in reading, writing and comprehension, as well as showing the public that they can be as academically successful as their sighted peers with the honing of their Braille skills,” said Gail Stricker, a librarian at the Iowa Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped, which is co-sponsoring the Challenge with the Iowa Braille School.
The Iowa Department for the Blind is located at 524 Fourth Street in Des Moines.
