CITY HEARING: Homeless Fight Eviction | News
Title (Max 100 Characters)
It’s the homeless versus City Hall as Des Moines tries to evict people who are squatting on city property.
At least for the next week, the homeless will be able to stay right where they are.
During a hearing Thursday morning, the city argued the homeless are putting themselves and others at risk by camping under bridges on city owned property.
After several complaints, the city posted eviction notices threatening arrest.
A defense attorney for the homeless argued there is no basis for arresting the homeless, and removing the camps now in these frigid temperatures could hurt or kill his clients because the homeless shelter is filled beyond capacity and his clients have nowhere else to go.
An administrative hearing officer is expected to make her ruling in the next week.
