CONSTRUCTION SEASON: List Of Roads Affected

With the change of weather comes the repair and renewal of roads in every corner of the state.

Through 2013, the DOT is set to spend around $600 million on construction.

This is a list of the most visible projects, according to the Iowa DOT’s Office of Construction and Materials in central Iowa.

BUS DETOUR: Bridge Closure Affects Route

With the upcoming closure of the Grand Avenue bridge, DART has announced that the Route 11 bus will be on a detour from March 25th.  

For riders in the Valley Junction area: The detour will require riders in the Valley Junction area to start their trips a few minutes earlier in the day. A shuttle bus will pick up and drop off customers along the regular route within Valley Junction, then detour around the bridge via 63rd Street, Interstate Highway 235, and 42nd Street. The shuttle bus will connect with another bus at 42nd Street and Ingersoll Avenue.

The Des Moines NAPA AutoCare Select Service Centers are offering the chance for customers to enter the Mother’s Day 2013 essay contest.

Until May 1st, a brief – up to 500 words - online essay that explains why their nominee deserves the car is all it takes.

You can nominate yourself, a friend, a neighbor, or anyone who deserves and would be in need of a used vehicle in great condition. The winner will be taking home their new prized-possession, a 2002 Pontiac Bonneville on May 10th.

YOUTH TRAINING: DOT Accepting Funding Applications

YOUTH TRAINING: DOT Accepting Funding Applications

The Iowa DOT is accepting applications to give training opportunities to youths.

Private, nonprofit organizations and public agencies are eligible to a 70 percent reimbursement if accepted.

The 2013 Urban Youth Corps program hopes to provide transportation-related work projects and training opportunities to 16-21 year olds who face barriers to employment in order to accomplish meaningful and productive improvements to transportation facilities.

OPEN HOUSES: Tomorrow Plan Consultations

There will be a series of open houses to introduce the nearly-complete "Tomorrow Plan," starting Tuesday in Altoona.

According to their website, the aims of the Tomorrow Plan are to engage the public in planning, promoting regionalism and increasing sustainability, among other things.

The DOT is proposing to reconstruct 4 miles of I-35 between two miles south of Iowa 92 in Warren County to two miles north of Iowa 92.

The work will include replacing the bridges over Middle River and reconstruction of the I-35/Iowa 92 interchange.

Construction near the Metro Waste Authority landfill aims to make traffic safer. Intersection improvements are expected to begin the first week in September on Highway 163 and the Metro Park East landfill entrance.
